We are back to school and homework is coming in fast and furious. With all of the new resources available online, a simple Google search can be overwhelming. There are many websites that offer free help and resources for all grade levels.
Math is normally the first subject that we see kids begin to struggle and fall behind. Many times the struggle will also bring the parents down with them. Where can you go for help for your child’s math homework when you don’t understand some of the new math or you are looking at math problems that you have not seen in decades, division by binomials and polynomials anyone?
There are different ways for you to use these websites, either alone or with your child. Some parents are more comfortable using the website to look over the information before helping their child, while others are more comfortable having their children get on the website and learn directly from the resources available.
Many teachers websites also offer help, tips, and suggestions if your student begins to fall behind. Don’t be afraid to contact your child’s teacher for more assistance. Some teachers have even been known to hold a parents refresher course.
These are the seven best free websites we have found for homework help:
Kahn Academy
Khan Academy offers assistance for grade levels kindergarten through high school. They provide videos and practice exercises. Parents and students can add teachers as learning coaches. Coaches can add additional assignments in the areas that the student is struggling to master. Subjects include computer programming, art history, economics, math and much more.
Internet 4 Classrooms
Internet 4 Classrooms provides assistance for grades kindergarten through high school. One thing that sets Internet 4 Classrooms apart is the extensive Foreign Language selection. They offer links to many tutorials and video lessons.
StudyGeek
This resource is specifically for math. StudyGeek provides experienced tutors for geometry, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and more. Assistance is provided for advanced high school and college level courses. All tutors have at least a master’s or Ph.D. degree in the subject they are teaching.
BJ Pinchbeck’s Homework Helper
This is a homework resource site for elementary through college students. BJ Pinchbeck’s Homework Helper offers links in many subjects including art, music, computer science, math, English, foreign languages, health, and programming.
HippoCampus
This resource offers assistance for all grades and subjects, especially math and science for middle school and high school. They provide assistance in the form of quizzes, videos, animations, and multiple simulations. HippoCampus offers a video series called STEMbite that takes math and science into the real world.
Scholastic
This is a great resource for younger children. We all remember the Scholastic book forms from elementary school. Here you will find a flash card maker and many different printables to help with shapes, spelling, and beginning math. This website has a focus on reading and spelling.
Wonderopolis
This is a great site for kids in grades kindergarten through middle school. This site answers fun questions that are submitted by kids. Here you can find out who invented stickers or why we need eyelashes. Questions like these are great places to start looking for science fair and writing project ideas.
There are several websites that charge a monthly membership fee. I have not found any information or help on these sites that are not on the free sites listed above. In whatever way you decide to use these websites to help your child with their homework, please remember you are not alone. We are here to support each other.
